Biography

Councilwoman Tina Merlitti is proudly serving her third term on Akron City Council as the Ward 7 representative.  She is the Vice President of Council, chairs Council’s Budget and Finance Committee, and serves on the Economic Development and Job Creation, Planning and Public Utilities Committees.

In addition to her Council duties, Merlitti is very active in the community, having taken on several leadership roles.  She has served in various officer roles as a 13-year member of the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area and was named one of the “Women to Watch in 1999” by the Women’s History Project of the Akron Area.  She currently serves as Second Vice-President in the St. Paul’s Ladies Guild, a Trustee of the Firestone Park Citizen Council and is a member of the Great Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout Committee.

An avid gardener, Merlitti is a 2005 graduate of the OSU Extension Office’s Master Gardener Program, serves as Sponsorship Chair for the 2008 Tour of Gardens and is currently serving her fourth year as Peace Garden Chair for the Firestone Park Garden Club.

Merlitti also is a member of the Joint Board of Review, which makes recommendations to the Akron Board of Education and the city regarding new construction of Akron’s Community Learning Centers; the Greenprint for Akron Committee, which studies environmental issues in the city; and the Akron/Springfield/Coventry Joint Economic Development Board.

Merlitti was a State House Assistant and political consultant, and she worked for three years in the Summit County Executive’s Office as a Communications Specialist. Before she was named Communications Specialist, Merlitti spent eight years as Specialist with the county’s Emergency Management Agency.

A Stow native and long-time Akron resident, Merlitti is a graduate of St. Vincent – St. Mary High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from The Ohio State University.
