Ward 7 meeting tonight

Please join me at the Firestone Park Community Center tonight, Wednesday 5/27 at 7:00pm, for the Ward 7 neighborhood meeting!

Recall

I am frustrated with the breakdown of our process that this recall is revealing, and hope we can all learn a lesson after this is past.

Collectively, most of your Akron City Council members (including myself) voted yesterday to object to the recall. In spite of this gesture, there is an election to support or oppose the recall of the mayor June 23.

I will be opposing the recall.

Visit http://bit.ly/18JJCO for more coverage.

Where should bike racks be located in Ward 7?

We have the opportunity to suggest where we want new bike racks in Ward 7 – where would you like to see them located?

We recently found out we will have new bike racks at the following locations:

1459 Aster Avenue (Firestone Mini-Mart)
1479 Aster Avenue (Geppetto’s)
1497 Aster Avenue (Mod A Salon / Akron Pride Center)
352 Reed Avenue (apartments)

I’m looking forward to your feedback and comments!

June is Teen Immunization Month!

Immunizations are not just for babies and young children. Older children and teens need protection that vaccines offer too. Immunizations play a vital role in protecting children and teens from diseases that can cause serious life threatening illnesses and death. Many of these diseases are difficult to treat.

June has been declared Teen Immunization Month. This initiative that began last year with collaboration between The Summit County Health District, Akron City Health Department, Barberton City Health Department, Akron Children’s Hospital, and The Immunization Coalition of Summit County has now been joined with declaration of support by Summit County Council, the City of Akron, and most recently Governor Strickland.

Immunizations can protect teenagers from: Hepatitis A and B; Meningitis; Chicken Pox; Whooping Cough, also known as Pertussis; and Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause of cervical cancer in women. Yet more than 2300 cases of Chicken Pox, nearly 800 cases of Pertussis, and 40 cases of Meningococcal disease were reported in Ohio in 2008.

Immunization rates for teens in the United States remain far below national goals. Lowering disease rates among teens also assists in reducing the chance of spreading diseases to the elderly, children, and infants. Protection for one means protection for all.

Be sure to ask your doctor if there are any vaccines your Teen may need.
