From the Ohio Attorney General: Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act of 2009

Good news from the office of the Ohio Attorney General, Richard Cordray:

All tenants living in foreclosed residential properties now have additional protections thanks to a new law that President Obama signed into law last month.

The Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act of 2009 allows tenants who live in foreclosed residential properties to stay in their homes until they are given at least 90 days advance notice to vacate, with the buyer as the new landlord.

Moreover, if the tenant has a current lease, the tenant is entitled to stay until it expires, unless the buyer or some subsequent purchaser intends to move into the home and make it a primary residence – in which case, the tenant still must be given at least 90 days advance notice to vacate before being required to move out.  (To be protected, any lease must be a bona fide lease not made to the mortgagor or the child, spouse, or parent of the mortgagor, made at arms-length, and for fair market rent.)

The federal law applies to tenants who live in residential properties that are sold at a foreclosure sale on or after the law’s effective date, which was May 20, 2009.

For more information, including how to take action to inform important stakeholders, please visit http://www.nlihc.org to access the “Renters in Foreclosure” toolkit.

Tenants who need help in asserting their rights under the new law can get help from the local legal aid program in their area.

Your help needed for the 2009 Firestone Park Summer Celebration – June 27!

The annual Firestone Park Summer Celebration brings the community together in a display of community spirit and family fun.  The parade, festival, and fireworks are only possible through your financial support and the hard work of the Firestone Park Citizens Council volunteers.  During these tough economic times, it is more important than ever that we support positive community events and keep our traditions alive.

The City of Akron and the Akron Community Foundation supports the operation of the Firestone Park Citizens Councils efforts to bring the community together throughout the year.  The City of Akron also provides for the Akron Symphony Orchestra performance at the Summer Celebrations and Bridgestone Firestone helps support a portion of the fireworks.

In order to continue the success of past years’ events, we need your support and participation.  The collaboration between citizens, local business, and the City of Akron is what makes Firestone Park a great place to call home.

Please contact me if you are able to volunteer or donate, and give back to our wonderful community!

Recall weekend

I enjoyed putting up yard signs against the mayoral recall this weekend, hoping to bring visibility to voting AGAINST in the June 23 special election. While I wish that time was spent on so many other ways to contribute to our community, it is so important to remind you that your vote is critical for this and every election.

I voted AGAINST the mayoral recall May 26 – you can also vote early at your convenience by visiting the Board of Elections or calling 330-643-5200.

Make sure you vote now or June 23, let your voice be heard!
